Selamat Hari Raya 2024 2

THE COLOURS AND COMMUNAL BOND OF HARI RAYA: A PERSONAL REFLECTION

The Colours and Communal Bond of Hari Raya: A Personal Reflection

Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the dazzling culmination of Ramadan’s month-long of Puasa and reflection, resonates with a depth of tradition and heartwarming customs. Beyond its religious reverence, this celebration is a vibrant pageant of cultural heritage and communal bonds, weaving together a tapestry enriched with shared tales and festivities

In my memories, the days leading to Hari Raya pulsate with an energy. My childhood was adorned with anticipatory trips to the market with my parents, hunting for the right baju kurung or the smartest baju melayu, ensuring that we welcomed the festive day in our brightest finery. I recall the glint of pride in my mother’s eye as she watched his children mirror the exuberance of the season through these festive outfits as we look forward to visit our Muslim neighbours.

The concept of “balik kampung” is imbued with emotions far surpassing the hum of engines on congested roads returning to our beloved hometown. Each year, the pilgrimage to Uncle Mazlan’s house ties tighter, as the essence of togetherness was celebrated under their welcoming roof. Anticipating the decorations lovingly placed in every nook, and tantalising scents escaping the kitchen heralded a reunion that extended beyond bloodlines to include neighbours and acquaintances. The welcoming smell of warm old friends and tantalising food.

The Art of Forgiveness and Celebration

The tradition of seeking forgiveness amongst our muslim friends and elders – “maaf zahir dan batin” – though etched as a rite, always marked a crucial moment of self-introspection and humility. Speaking those words served as a reminder of the beauty in starting anew, strengthened by the genuine embraces and the envelopes of “duit raya” which symbolized more than material generosity; they were the currency of care and blessing.

A Gastronomical Fiesta

Hari Raya’s tapestry would be incomplete without the flavorful threads of its culinary heritage. Recipes passed down through generations come to life in the form of rendang’s rich complexity, lemang’s fragrant stickiness, and ketupat’s understated grace, charcoal smell of roasted lamb and satay, harmonising to narrate stories of unique cultural identity. They are not merely dishes but serve as a mouthwatering ode to the creativity and resilience embedded within Malay culture.

The Ensemble of Modernity and Tradition

It’s fascinating to witness how such timeless traditions mesh with the contemporary realm, be it with the coming of Industrial 4.0 or the Artificial Intelligence, the essence of Hari Raya perseveres, unwavering in its quest to renew bonds and celebrate communal unity. A link between we the human kind which is unique and unduplicatable by machines.

Conclusion

Each year, the festivities of Hari Raya Aidilfitri bloom like a spectacular flower in the garden of cultural celebrations in Malaysia. It serves as an affecting reminiscence for many who have been cradled in its customs, and for others, it is a splendid introduction to the Malaysian kinship and celebration. May each Hari Raya bring with it the joy of new clothes, the comfort of familiar rituals, the delicious anticipation of ancestral recipes, and the enduring promise of communal accord.

In the spirit of Hari Raya, I extend my warmest greetings – Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, maaf zahir dan batin. May the joy of the season fill your home with peace, your heart with gratitude, and your community with harmony. Maaf Zahir dan Batin!
