PM Goes Shopping, Observes GST Implementation

PETALING JAYA, April 1 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak surprised shoppers by appearing at a hypermarket in Kota Damansara here on the first day of the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Najib, who was attired in dark pants and a white, long-sleeved shirt, arrived at the hypermarket at 4.45 pm and checked on the prices of goods.

He picked up a shopping basket, went to the personal care products section and compared prices before selecting a toothpaste.

He also went to the sections for drinks, food and vegetables and chose a beverage, a loaf of bread and a pineapple.

The prime minister was accompanied by the chief activist of the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM), Datuk Nadzim Johan; Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) president Datuk N. Marimuthu and Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) president SM Mohamed Idris.

Najib also chatted with the employees of the hypermarket and posed for photographs with shoppers.

After about 20 minutes, he went to the payment counter, paid for the goods and scrutinised the receipt which he later uploaded onto his Twitter account.

“The receipt stated clearly the standard-rated and zero-rated goods. Good,” he tweeted.

Najib later had a discussion with Nadzim, Marimuthu and Mohamed Idris on consumer issues at a food outlet in the building housing the hypermarket.
